Cal Band visits Heavenly
On Friday, January 18th the Cal Berkeley Marching Band graced Heavenly/South Lake Tahoe in appropriate Cal Band style rolling out the entire production… Pulling up in a U-Haul full of instruments the band dispersed amongst the general public to see if they could in fact fit a sousaphone in the Gondola. Well they did. And they didn't bring just one – they brought all four. It didn't end there, as the 150 band members continued up the Gondola you could feel your fellow skiers & riders' confusion/excitement in the air… The first set raged with a stellar "Smells like teen spirit" rendition at the top of the Gondola – then the band had to put the equipment down for a few turns on our tempting terrain. Then treating Heavenly like the field of their opposing teams, they strapped on the equipment to play & shred our Big Easy run in the same poetic motion!! There's a sight I can confidently say I have never seen. From that point the smiles were flowing, the weekend had started, and everyone was getting their jollies to the Cal Band at Adventure Peak. After a tremendous closing performance in the Heavenly Village the band had set the tone for another notorious night in South Lake Tahoe! Calling out all Universities: if any other band director, member, or enthusiast out there is reading this and think your band can top it - the challenge is on the table and we would love to hear from you.
